BigML Events 2018

BigML brings Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to the platform, a key unsupervised Machine Learning technique used to transform a given dataset in order to yield uncorrelated features and reduce dimensionality. BigML PCA unique implementation is distinct from other approaches to PCA in that it can handle numeric and non-numeric data types, including text, categorical, items fields, as well as combinations of different data types. PCA can be used in any industry vertical as a preprocessing technique to improve supervised learning performance, with the caveat that some measure of interpretability may be sacrificed. It is commonly applied in fields with high dimensional data including bioinformatics, quantitative finance, and signal processing.

In order to really make ML a commodity available to any programmer, we need to go a step beyond providing ready-to-use ML resources via scalable (typically REST/JSON based) APIs: automatization of arbitrarily complex ML workflows and algorithms without losing the simplicity and scalability already offered by SaaS solutions for modeling is a must. We'll explore present answers to the challenge of using BigML's domain-specific language and services. This talk will try to give you an introduction to these topics, using BigML to illustrate them (but without entering into the nitty-gritty details of the platform).

Our Spring 2018 release brings Fusions to the BigML platform, a new supervised resource that solves classification or regression problems using the power of several models. A Fusion combines different supervised models (models, ensembles, logistic regressions, and deepnets) and aggregates their predictions to balance out the individual weaknesses of single models. Fusions, available from the BigML Dashboard, API, and WhizzML, follow the same principle as ensembles, where the combination of multiple models often provides better performance than any of the individual components.

Our first release of the year presents operating thresholds, a feature that allows you to tune the performance of your classification model to your specific use case. BigML operating thresholds, available from the BigML Dashboard, API, and WhizzML, give you the power to be more or less aggressive when applying certain classes to an instance, which is especially useful in domains like fraud detection or medical diagnosis where the consequences of some classifications may be very different.
